3DTin

Introduction

3DTin is a web-based modeler. Although 3DTin has certain design limitations, it is probably the quickest, simplest way for you to create your own unique 3D models and have them printed by the MakerBot. It allows you to use voxels (Volumetric Picture Element) to build models easily and quickly—similar to snapping together lego bricks.

You must use Firefox, Google Chrome or any other web-GL enabled browser to access the the online 3DTin application.

3DTin allows you to combine voxels and then modify the group. You can:
  • Rotate 90° counter-clockwise or clockwise
  • Flip over the horizontal or vertical axes
  • Smooth
  • Double the size
  • Extrude
  • Delete

You can add more complicated shapes by clicking on the Add Geometries icon

When editing an added geometry you are presented with different options:
  • Rotate 90° counter-clockwise or clockwise
  • Scale
  • Shear
  • Flip over the horizontal or vertical axes
  • Edit the original parameters
  • Clone
  • Delete

Some tips:
  • Save often.
  • Before making a major edit, consider saving your model and then working on a copy
  • When importing 2-D pictures for conversion to 3-D models, try to find simple, vector based images.
