Your School

Spend a class being observers and recorders.
  • Go out into the school and observe how and why people move through and interact with the different spaces

  • Draw, write or diagram this interaction in any way you want as long as you can convey the information.

  • What things did you notice? What kinds of interactions happen in this space? What interactions occurred because of the space? What interactions were in spite of the space? How did people move in the space? Quickly, slowly, or lingering in some areas and not others, or gathering? What about the space caused those interactions? (In other words, long, thin corridors encourage people to move through them in certain ways. Larger, more open, taller spaces might cause people to gather or linger.)

  • How do the negative spaces inside and between buildings shape how people interact with the space?
